Presidet Joyce Banda for a fresh Mandate by RMOS complaint

President Joyce Banda says Malawians should give her and her newly unveiled running mate Sosten Gwengwe, a fresh mandate to govern Malawi saying their vision is that of a transformational agenda.
“I and my running mate seek our own full mandate of a full term…Our country is much better now that when I took over two years ago. Our people are no longer desperate for forex, fuel and other basic social services…I have shown that it is possible to develop Malawi.”
She was presenting her nomination papers to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chair Justice Maxon Mbendera at Comesa Hall in Blantyre this morning.

The People’s Party (PP) leader said the two years she had been president offered her an opportunity to lay a good foundation for good leadership in the years to come.
“It was God’s plan for me to be president for these two years, as those were like foundational years, now it’s time to start the actual construction. In these years, I have seen what we need to hold on to or get rid of as a country. I have also seen that it is possible to develop. I have seen that anything is possible,” said Banda.
The President stressed that there is a lot of hope for Malawi, quoting Ernest & Young’s recent prediction that Malawi will be one of the fastest growing economies in the next five years.
She also bragged that the PP pair was well balanced and inclusive.
“I take pride in presenting to you a man and a woman-as a team, and also a woman and a youth-as a team,” she said, referring to the 36-year-old Gwengwe who will turn 37 on the polling day May 20.
Gwengwe is the Minister of Trade and Industry and was unveiled at a ceremony held yesterday in Blantyre.
Banda said her choice of Gwengwe was to demonstrate her trust in the notion that that youth are leaders of today and not tomorrow as widely believed.
She repeatedly stated that she and Gwengwe were ready to lead the country and serve all Malawians regardless of their social or economic status.
Mbendera quashed assertions that MEC was in a position to decide the poll results in favour of President Banda saying the commission could not be drawn to a compromise on who wins or loses the election.
“Let me clear the myth that we (MEC) have already decided in your favour. That duty is the duty of the people that will vote, we are only referees, what they decide is what we shall declare as victory,” said Mbendera.
He further challenged that the commission
was ready to be taken to book on any arising cases of professional misconduct in relation to the election results.
“If you hear anything that we are not going on the path we ought to take as an independent commission, then report and expose us because what we want and stand for is a clear, fair and credible election,” he said.
Banda’s choice of Gwengwe continues to draw mixed reactions from analysts who believe although Gwengwe is new to politics, he could be a force to reckon with.
The analysts also advise President Banda and PP to handle the running mate issue with much care, considering that dropped Vice President Khumbo Kachali and others equally ‘injured’ by Banda’s decision may leave the party.
Asked to explain Kachali’s conspicuous absence at the unveiling ceremony Friday night, Banda told the press “I am not Khumbo Kachali so i cannot explain his absence”.
She said Kachali was meant to help her finish off President Bingu Wa Mutharika’s term which is now over.
“I made it clear to him that I wanted us to work together for the two years, those two years are over now and there is no discussion about it,” she said.
Today is the last for presidential aspirants to present their nomination papers to MEC.
So far, two independent presidential aspirants have dropped out of the race for undisclosed reasons although it is widely believed they did so for lack of funds

New Caledonia Travel Place by Anjimile Mtila Oponyo

This semisecret gem of the South Pacific, a three-hour flight from Sydney, is attracting visitors like never before. Thank infrastructural upgrades like a refurbished international airport, improved roads and bridges, and the arrival of high-profile properties like the new Hilton Noumea La Promenade Residences and the Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Resort & Spa, opening this summer.

An island itinerary reads like a fantasy novel: snorkeling and diving in one of the world’s largest lagoons, an aquamarine stunner populated by thousands of coral and marine species and home to the world’s second largest reef (after the Great Barrier); horseback riding through verdant mountains and indigenous Kanak villages; kayaking by moonlight among the submerged forest of the Blue River Provincial Park. The cosmopolitan capital, Nouméa, has its own allures, like Le Roof, where you might spot dolphins diving in the distance while savoring the fresh oysters, and the Tjibaou Cultural Center, a Renzo Piano-designed museum housing one of the world’s largest collections of Pacific art.

Niagara Falls Travel Place in New York by Anjimile Mtila Oponyo

Known for its remarkable natural beauty and tourist kitsch, Niagara Falls is now evolving into a draw for those who love food as well as those who seek thrills. A year ago, the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute opened a high-end restaurant, deli, patisserie and gelateria steps from the American Falls, transforming the area’s dining scene overnight.

A gastro pub called the Griffon Pub, which features 50 beers on tap and creative New American dishes like gnocchi poutine, opened a few miles east of the falls in August. On the Canadian side, oenophiles can get a taste of the region’s growing wine scene just a short bike ride from the falls along the Niagara River Recreation Trail. Nondining attractions are plentiful, too. This year, Canadians will host two major War of 1812 bicentennial re-enactments in the area, and, beginning this spring, visitors will be able to see the falls from a new luxury catamaran. Tourism officials on the Canadian side appear poised to allow daredevils to zip line across or rappel down the Niagara Gorge later this year.

Munnar Travel Place in India by Anjimile Mtila Oponyo

There is something quite majestic about the green rolling hills of the tea plantations in Munnar, a town in the Indian state of Kerala.

When I arrived at a small guesthouse called the Misty Green View, just outside of Munnar, a traditional South Indian meal awaited me, full of fragrance and spice. In the morning, I drank tea on the balcony and watched the dense fog slowly unravel across the velvety landscape before climbing to the top of a road and capturing this rainbow.

Zagreb Travel Place in Croatia by Anjimile Mtila Oponyo

June is a fantastic time to visit Croatia’s capital Zagreb – the weather is warming up (with average highs around 25°C/77°F), pavement cafes buzz with activity, and festivals fill the streets with revellers. Cest is D’Best (cestisdbest.com) lures street performers from around the world, turning the city into a huge circus from 5-11 June; Ljeto na Strosu (ljetonastrosu.com), held from May-Sept, transforms a leafy central street into a quirky cultural hub with an outdoor cinema, concerts and art installations.

Croatia’s biggest music festival, INmusic (inmusicfestival.com), is a three-day lakeside extravaganza that attracts plenty of big-name bands  (23-25 June) – this year’s headliners include multi-Grammy Award winners The Black Keys, and legendary alt-rockers the Pixies. Tickets are ludicrously cheap (just €48 for the three days, or €69 including camping), facilities are superb (think yoga classes, swimming, free wifi and warm showers) and the location beside Lake Jarun is so close to the city centre that it’s easy to dip in and out as you please.

Chicago Travel Place in USA by Anjimile Mtila Oponyo

Turkey’s Turquoise coast heats up in June, but the sun hasn’t quite hit full strength. Follow sections of the 500km-long Lycian Way on foot through ancient ruins, pine forests, and to glorious sandy beaches. Make sure you pack sturdy walking shoes. There are campsites en route, or base yourself in a town and tackle it in day trips (visit cultureroutesinturkey.com/c/lycian-way for maps).

Ölüdeniz is a good starting point, with steep paths from the high-end hotels through tiny Falaya to unspoilt Butterfly Valley and its sandy beach. Further south along the coast, Patara can claim Turkey's longest uninterrupted beach as well as some of Lycia's finest ruins. Or if it’s comfort you’re after, Kalkan has some of the best dining options on the route, including the excellent Korsan Fish Terrace.
